Do you have a lampshade that's been collecting dust and already looking old and torn? Don't thrown it away! Upcycle your lampshade and turn it into a beautiful rattan-like lampshade that you won't believe how easy it is to create!

All you need for this project is raffia cord, hot glue gun, your old lampshade, spray paint and a little bit of patience!

Get the raffia cord right here!

Deconstructing your lampshade

First things first, you wanna make sure you have a clean base to start your project on. Depending on what type of material your lampshade is made out, take out the material that covers the "cage" or the body of the lampshade.

If it's made out of fabric like ours, use a cutter or scissors and just tear the fabric off of the lampshade base. Make sure to clean off any dirt, leftover glue or remaining fabric or material that gets stuck on the lampshade base.

Prepping your lampshade

Depending on what color you want the structure of the lampshade to be, prep your lampshade by spray painting the color of the lampshade with the color that you want to display later on. For instance, if you want the base of the lampshade to be really prominent and be a highlight of your lampshade, have a go with black.

It depends on your style and preference, you can also spray paint the body of the lampshade to match with the color of the raffia cord — it's all on you to decide!

"Weave" away your lampshade!

Now here's the most important part — weaving the actual shade to your lamp! Get your raffia cord, and start wrapping the circumference of the lampshade body in sections so that the cord doesn't get tangled. Make sure to glue down the cord that wraps around the frame of the lampshade to make sure it doesn't move around. Wrap the cord around the frame until you reach the bottom.

If you want to make the lampshade more tidy and neat, wrap the cord around as tightly as you can to create a tight lampshade look. You can also get a thicker sized raffia for a more bulkier and basket-look finish!

Time to shine!

Now that you're done weaving, it's time to see how it actually looks! Use a light bulb that fits the base of the bulb in your lamp, and watch how the lampshade creates a unique effect on the glow!

This is definitely a great way to add in a natural element into your space, and what's more fantastic is that it's sustainable and you don't have to buy an entire new lampshade (that might also be plain, boring and so normal). Try out this project for yourself and you'll see how your effort and time pays off so well with this one of a kind boho lampshade!
